SIMPLE QUESTION: IS WRITING FOR ME

writing

The is no one in this world that can actually stop you from being what you really want to be. On second thought, there is only one with the power. And that person in case you are wondering, is you. But there are some things that we force ourselves to do which are not ours to do. Doing those things that you are not meant to do, is a ticket to living a miserable life. You might be wondering, with all that talk of rich writers and you too want to be rich, can writing cut it for you?

There is no way of knowing for sure whether you can make a greater writer not unless you try and see what happens. But there are indicators that may show you that writing is definitely for you or you should try something else.

SIGNS YOU COULD MAKE A GREAT WRITER:

1.     WAS IT A CHILDHOOD PASSION?

Great musicians started in the church choir as little kids. Great rappers knew that they wanted to rap by the time they reached puberty. Great engineers started making things out of wasted raw materials when they were really young. Mark Zuckerberg made his first software at a very tender age. Bill Gates knew computers were his thing very early in his life.

What did you do in your free time as a small kid? Did you always love to creator stories about demons chasing kids in the neighborhood in the middle of the night when they were sent to the shop by their parents? Did you write essays or compositions in primary school that had your teacher congratulating you for weeks?

If you know that what you loved as kid has something to do with creativity and putting it down on paper, then you are in for the ride. Writing might just be the thing for you.

2.     ARE YOU GUILTY OF BEING ADDICTED TO READING?

Writers read. Then they write. Can you call yourself a junk reader? Do you find yourself always chasing more and more books and never getting enough of information? Do you bail out on parties just to stay in your room to read?

Well, writing is definitely something that you should try. Writer’s consume information like fire consumes dry grass during a windy day.

3.     ARE YOU BORED WHEN YOU GO OUT TO THE MOVIES WITH YOUR FRIENDS?

Writer’s think differently. The movies start, but then when all your friends are lost in the thrills of not knowing what will happen in the next scenes, the writer is already in front of the movie, imagining scenes and how the mystery in the movie will be finally solved.

4.     DO YOU ZONE OUT? LIKE A LOT OF ZONING OUT?

Writers like imagining. A writer may be talking about a specific topic with his/ her friends but then instead of following the topic, he/ she will get lost in fantasy that gets created in the brain out of nowhere.

writing and imagination

How often does your friends have to ask you whether you are even listening to them?

If your answer is a lot, then writing might just be the thing for you.

5.     ARE YOU GOOD AT CREATING BULLSHIT STORIES?

Do you have the ability to keep everyone listening to you as you create stories that to them feel like they are true? Did you ever have children surround you just to listen to you tell stories that you created in your head. Stories about anything, Monsters, dinosaurs, about Satan and demons.
Are you good at crafting lies that seem like they are totally true?

6.     HAVE YOU EVER DREAMED ABOUT WRITING YOUR OWN BOOK?

Dreams come true. Why not make your dream a reality? Try writing that book. You will get the feedback you need whether you should make writing a career or no.

7.     FINDING THE MEANINGS TO NEW WORDS

You see a vocabulary and you can’t stop thinking about it until you finally find its meaning. Writers love new words. It kind of gets boring to keep using the same words over and over again.

8.     CRITICISM? BRING IT ON!

You like criticism. It helps you find relevant information that helps you improve on your writing quality. If you hate criticism, writing is not for you. You will never write anything good enough without listening to critics.

SIGNS THAT WRITING IS NOT FOR YOU

1.     WRITING TO BRAG.

Do you write in order to attract the opposite sex? Do you write to become famous? Do you write so that people can tell you how awesome you are?

If your answer to any of these is a yes, then you are doing it wrong. Writing is not about bragging. If it’s about bragging to you, then writing is not for you. Because, what will happen when you write and the opposite sex does not get impressed, what will happen when you write and not get famous?

2.     CREATIVITY IS NOT A THING THAT YOU OWN

Not unless you are creative, you will keep pumping out pieces of information that you have copy-pasted from elsewhere. This will do you no good. Your readers are not idiots. They are not looking for copy-cats. They are looking for something fresh. Something new. Something they haven’t seen yet. Give it to them or get out of the game (that’s what they are saying).

3.     YOU ARE A PERFECTIONIST

Come on. When will you get it out to the real people who are there to give you the best feedback that you need so that you know what you need to add and what you need to remove?

WRAPPING UP EVERYTHING

There it is. Don’t consider my ranting the perfect measure for who should write and who shouldn’t write. Consider the above as just indicators that show you what to watch out for. The best determinant is to give it a try and see whether it works or it doesn’t. Happy writing my friends. I welcome your thoughts on the article in the comments section.
