12 TOP TIPS FOR KICKASS BOOK IDEAS

book ideas

Idea.

The four-letter word that has transformed people’s lives from living in the poor dejected ghetto areas and into eating on the same table with the kings, driving Bugatti and buying multi-million-dollar homes.

Where do they originate?

Where can we get them?

Where can I get that book idea that will take me from being as broke as hell and skyrocket me into JK Rowling and Stephen King’s league?

Do I have to meditate all day and then pray all night in order to get that book idea that will make me millions and even become the next big movie that Hollywood is working on?

Luckily, you don’t have to do anything that might seem like madness to you or to any outside looker.

All you have to do is to read this one blogpost and take home with you the real ways that real writers come up with big deal book ideas.

Before you even proceed. Remember one thing:

“Ideas are easy, implementation is hard”-Guy Kawasaki

So, don’t think that just coming up with ideas is going to cut it.

The process of transforming yourself into a pro writer is a bit harder, harder than you might actually think.

TOP WAYS TO COME UP WITH KICK ASS BOOK IDEAS

1.    PERFORM A SMALL SURVEY: ASK YOUR FRIENDS WHAT THEY ENJOY READING

One night when you are out with your bros just pop up the question. Ask them what they enjoy reading. Take the answers that they give you and whatever that impresses you take it and turn it into a reality.

One thing to watch out for though:
Make sure that they are not drunk when you ask them ?. Because you already know what that means in case they are drunk.

Chances are, there are a lot of people out there who have a similar taste as to your friends.

2.    REINVENT A SCENE FROM A BOOK THAT YOU READ AND LOVED

Imagine that scene in your head.

Think. And think again.

Think of all the possible ways that scene could have ended or even how that scene could have started.

Change the characters.

Change the conversation presented in that scene.

Imagine what story you could write if you decided to now put the reinvented scene in the start of your book.

Go do that. Follow through.

Make sure that you finish that book.

Publish it. You never know. It could be the best freaking idea that ever came to your mind.

3.    TRAVELLING AND SEEING THE WORLD

Go learn about the African culture.

Go eat Chinese meals and enjoy the experience.

Go watch how people live in other countries.

Get out of that usual routine that you have been stuck in for like forever.

You can choose to write a book about the African community, the Maasai, culture that you learn while visiting a country like Kenya.

You can get a book idea in Japan while you are visiting Hiroshima and or Nagasaki to write about what transpired during the second world war.

Travelling will actually stock you with a sack full of ideas. You will just have to choose from any one of these ideas.

4.    READ

Reading will present you with a lot of facts and as well keep you on top of your industry and genre. You will get to know what other writers are writing about.

This alone will start popping new ideas into your head.

Actually, I don’t think that anyone can qualify into being a writer if he or she doesn’t read.

5.    ASK YOURSELF THIS SIMPLE QUESTION: “WHAT IF?”

Sounds crazy, right?

Well, no.

Ever watched those sci-fi movies?

Zombie movies?

Yeah?

Did you ever wonder how it came that someone came up with a mad idea of coming up with machines that can do some weird things like cook and eat and transform into rockets and then go to sleep on mars before it is 7:00pm?

I will tell you how they did it.

It’s not complicated.

They just asked this simple question: “What if?”

Then the writing ideas just originated from there as they wrote the movie manuscript.

6.    USE A WRITING PROMPT

A writing prompt is just a line that you read and then it just prompts you to continue writing from where it stops. Writing your story based on that starting line.

I remember being in primary school where we were supposed to write essays based on some starting lines.

An example of a writing prompt will be something like:

You are walking home from the bar. You keep seeing this guy behind you….

Get what I am talking about now?

Yes?

You see, when you read the above line, a lot of ideas will start popping into your head.

There are a lot of websites and books that collate writing prompts. These include:

  • Lines of dialogues
  • Scenarios
  • Photos
  • Snippets to help you started

7.    WRITE FREELY: WITHOUT ANY GOAL

Yeah, just grab a pen and a piece of paper.

If you like using your computer, just switched it on and open a new word document and just start typing anything that comes into your mind regardless of whether it makes sense or not.

Whatever you are writing is not going to the market. That means you don’t have to care.

Guess what?

It never disappointed.

8.    USE A SITUATION IN YOUR LIFE AS INSPIRATION

What situation in your life that you consider to be important.

What situation angers you?

Check your life. It could fuel a million-dollar book idea.

9.    FLICK THROUGH MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS

You will get to learn about what people are reading and this will give you an idea on what to write about if you ever decide to write a book.

Magazines and newspapers always carry with them the trending issues.

There is no better way to capture people attentions than when you write to them about what is trending.

10. CHECK OUT ON YOUR HISTORY WITH PEOPLE

People you have lost.

People you have loved and dumped.

People who dumped you.

People who friend zoned you.

All these could be a source of great ideas for your next Romance novel.

11. GO OUT AND JUST LISTEN TO OTHERS TALKING

I know that eavesdropping is not considered moral in the society that we are living right now.

But I really don’t care.

Sometimes these society rules have to be broken for the greater good.

The greater good here being to get writing ideas.

Just because you are lacking on ideas does not mean that everyone else is lacking on them too.

Pick a notebook and walk out of your house and go outside where there are other people.

Listen to these people and whatever they are talking about.

That might just pop up some ideas into your head.

Write these down on your notebook.

12. WHAT BOOK DO YOU WISH EXISTED?

Yeah, that book that you wish that you could buy from Amazon.

Write that book yourself and get to sell it on amazon.

You don’t have to be knowledgeable about that specific topic that you choose to write about.

With google available, each and every information that you need is just at your fingertips.

Research and write that book.

If you wish that the book existed, chances are, a lot of other people are wishing that it existed too.

Solve that problem for them and get paid in the process.

CLOSING WORD

This list of how to get book ideas is not exhaustive. I don’t even think that anyone could ever write a list that could ever exhaust how to get book ideas.

Though, I have my comments open for people to write their favorite ways about how they come up with book ideas.
